Failed MOT on emissions in Cannock: what it really means (and what a proper fix looks like)
Failing an MOT on emissions feels personal. It’s not. It’s your car telling you it can’t meet the required standard under test conditions — and modern diesels have more systems than ever involved in that result.

Advisory vs fail: what’s the difference?
MOT defect categories changed in 2018. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (via its Matters of Testing blog) explains that faults are categorised and “major” is used for failures, alongside “dangerous” defects.
Separately, the RAC explains MOTs are categorised into Dangerous, Major and Minor, and that advisories are notes added on the MOT certificate after those categories.
So:
- Advisory = “not failed today, but keep an eye on this” (or “starting to wear”).
- Minor = a defect recorded that doesn’t fail the MOT.
- Major / Dangerous = fail (dangerous generally means don’t drive until repaired).
What does the MOT emissions test check on a diesel?
For diesels, the MOT manual section “8.2.2 Compression ignition engine emissions” covers:
- Emissions control equipment (visible checks)
- Smoke opacity testing (metered test)
- MIL (engine management light) checks on applicable vehicles
Emissions control equipment: DPF, EGR, SCR
The MOT inspection manual states testers only need to check components that are visible and identifiable, explicitly listing diesel oxidation catalysts, DPFs, EGR valves and SCR valves.
It also says you should reject vehicles where manufacturer-fitted emissions control equipment is missing, obviously modified or obviously defective.
Engine management light (MIL)
For diesels first used on or after 1 July 2008, the MOT manual requires checking that the MIL illuminates and then goes off. A malfunction-indicating MIL is a major defect in the emissions section.
Smoke opacity test basics
The MOT manual gives the test conditions (approved smoke meter, safe engine condition, engine temperature typically at least 80°C for post-1980 vehicles where required, etc.).
It also includes: on vehicles fitted with a DPF, no visible smoke should be emitted during the metered check — and visible smoke on a DPF-equipped vehicle is listed as a major defect.
Common causes of a modern diesel emissions failure
DPF problems (blocked, damaged, or tampered)
DPF tampering is directly addressed in the MOT manual, including rejection where there’s evidence of tampering (for example, a cut-and-reweld DPF unless there’s evidence of a valid reason such as filter cleaning).
RAC guidance also notes the DPF check has been part of the MOT since 2014 and that a removed DPF will fail.
EGR faults
EGR valves are part of the emissions control equipment list in the MOT manual.
Even if the EGR itself isn’t “visibly missing”, an EGR fault can contribute to increased soot and regeneration problems, which then shows up as smoke or DPF issues.
SCR/AdBlue issues and NOx control
AdBlue is used with SCR systems to reduce NOx emissions.
The MOT manual includes SCR valves in the list of visible emissions control equipment checks.
Important reality check: the MOT smoke test is mainly about opacity/visible smoke, not a full “NOx lab test” — but emissions system faults can still cause MIL warnings, limp modes, and poor running that affect the test outcome (especially if the MIL is on).
Engine running issues
If the engine is misfiring, over-fuelling, or has a boost leak, that can show as smoke. The MOT manual includes fail points for excessive smoke/vapour to the extent it would obscure the vision of other road users.
What a legitimate fix looks like (and what to avoid)
A proper fix usually follows this order:
- Confirm the fail reason (smoke opacity? MIL? visible smoke on DPF vehicle? equipment tampering?)
- Diagnose the root cause using live data + fault code analysis (not “clear and hope”).
- Fix the cause (e.g., restore regen ability, repair sensor faults, repair boost leaks, resolve EGR sticking, address AdBlue/SCR faults)
- Verify with re-test logic (does the MIL behave correctly? does the car regen properly? does smoke output improve?)
The “code clear” problem
Clearing codes without fixing the cause might temporarily turn a light off — but the MOT manual requires the MIL to illuminate and then go off appropriately, and if the fault returns, you’re back where you started.
It’s also how people end up paying twice.

What does an emissions advisory mean?
An advisory is a note on the MOT certificate that isn’t a fail, but highlights something to monitor or address. RAC explains advisories sit alongside the defect categories.
What causes a diesel to fail the smoke opacity test?
Excessive smoke output, failure to meet the manufacturer/default opacity limit, or visible smoke on a DPF-equipped vehicle can all be fail points in the MOT manual.
Will my car fail if the engine management light is on?
