❄️ Top Tips for De-Icing Your Car at Home (Without Damaging It)
If you’ve ever stood shivering on your driveway, trying to scrape through an inch of frost with a loyalty card and a bit of wishful thinking — this one’s for you.
Cold mornings are tough enough without adding cracked windscreens, scratched paint, or late starts into the mix. So here’s our friendly guide to de-icing your car safely and efficiently, straight from the Car Friend team.
🚗 1. Start the Engine — But Stay With It
Get your car running and switch the heater on low. Gradually build up the temperature to warm the glass from the inside out — it’ll make the outside ice melt faster.
👉 Important: Never leave your car unattended while it’s running. It’s actually illegal to do so on a public road, and if it’s stolen, your insurer won’t cover it. Stay nearby and keep an eye on it.
🧊 2. Use a Proper De-Icer Spray
There’s a reason those cans exist — they work! A good-quality de-icer melts frost fast without harming paintwork or wiper blades. Keep one in the house (not the boot), so it’s warm and ready to go.
Top tip: Spray evenly and wait 20–30 seconds before scraping. It’ll come off much easier.
🪟 3. Get a Decent Ice Scraper
Leave the credit card in your wallet! Improvised scrapers can scratch glass, damage rubber seals, and ruin trim. A proper plastic scraper costs a couple of quid and saves you a world of trouble.
☕ 4. Never Use Boiling Water
Tempting, but dangerous. Sudden temperature changes can crack your windscreen in seconds. If you must use water, make sure it’s lukewarm — and pour it gently.
🧴 5. Make a DIY De-Icer (for Emergencies)
Caught short? Mix two parts isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) with one part water and add a tiny drop of washing-up liquid in a spray bottle. Works surprisingly well, and it won’t refreeze quickly.
🧽 6. Lift Your Wipers Overnight
A simple trick: lift your wipers away from the glass before bed. It stops the blades freezing to the windscreen and helps them last longer too.
🧣 7. Stop Tomorrow’s Frost Before It Starts

Cover your windscreen overnight with an old towel, blanket, or a purpose-made frost cover.

Rub the inside of your windscreen with a little shaving foam, then wipe it off — it helps prevent fogging.

Before setting off, make sure all windows, mirrors, and lights are fully clear. It’s illegal (and dangerous) to drive with restricted visibility, even if it’s “just a little patch.”
