10 Times Car Jargon Made No Sense

Have you ever walked out of a garage nodding along, but deep down thinking, “What on earth did they just say?” You’re not alone. Car jargon can be confusing, intimidating, and, let’s face it, sometimes downright ridiculous.

That’s why at Car Friend, we pride ourselves on explaining everything clearly, without the jargon or the judgment.

Here are ten common car-related phrases that leave drivers scratching their heads—and how we at Car Friend would explain them instead.

1. “Your Car’s Engine is Misfiring”

What it sounds like: Your engine is somehow missing the target it was aiming for.
What it really means: One or more of your engine’s cylinders isn’t doing its job properly, which could make the car feel jerky or less powerful.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Think of your engine as a team of runners. If one runner is limping, the whole team slows down. We’ll figure out which cylinder is limping and fix it so your car runs smoothly again.”

2. “You Need a Brake Fluid Flush”

What it sounds like: Something messy is about to happen to your brakes.
What it really means: Over time, brake fluid absorbs moisture, which can make your brakes less effective. A “flush” simply means replacing the old fluid with fresh, clean fluid.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Brake fluid is like the lifeline of your brakes. Over time, it gets tired and needs a refresh to keep your brakes working perfectly. Think of it as a spa day for your brake system!”

3. “Your Tyres are Showing Signs of Feathering”

What it sounds like: Your tyres are growing feathers. Is that even possible?
What it really means: The edges of your tyres are wearing unevenly, usually because of an alignment issue.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Imagine your tyres are shoes. If they’re worn unevenly, it’s like walking on the sides of your feet—it’s uncomfortable and not great for long-term use. We’ll realign your tyres to stop this from happening. Oh and it will save you money on actual tyres and you will save money on fuel too!”

4. “The CV Joint is Clicking”

What it sounds like: Your car’s joints are cracking like an old pair of knees.
What it really means: The CV joint helps your car’s wheels turn while you’re driving. If it’s clicking, it’s probably worn out and needs attention.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Think of the CV joint as your car’s knee joint. If it’s clicking, it’s like a creaky knee—it needs a little TLC to get back to full strength. Over time the grease can degrade or if the boot that is holding it all together is broken the grease that keeps the joint moving can be lost all together. Sometimes it just needs a new joint cover or CV boot and some new grease but if its left too long the joint might need to be replaced too (that’s a bit more expensive) ”

5. “Your Alternator is Failing”

What it sounds like: Your car has an “alternative” side that’s not quite working out.
What it really means: The alternator is what charges your car’s battery while you’re driving. If it’s not working, your battery won’t last long, and your car might not start.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Your alternator is like your car’s personal power station. If it’s not working, your battery can’t recharge, and that’s why your car might struggle to start. We’ll check it out and make sure your car stays powered up. On most cars the alternator is linked to your battery with a belt (alternator belt) and this directly puts charge into your battery. Alternators as they age can seize up or just fail like any electronic item. Sometimes the battery isn’t charging because the belt has an issue. Whatever it is we can get to the bottom of it and get you back up and running in no time”

6. “Your Exhaust is Blowing”

What it sounds like: Your exhaust has turned into a wind machine.
What it really means: There’s a hole or a crack in your exhaust system, and gases are escaping where they shouldn’t.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Your exhaust is like a chimney for your car—it safely funnels out harmful gases. If it’s ‘blowing,’ it means there’s a leak somewhere, which could make your car noisy and less efficient. We’ll patch it up and get it running smoothly again.”

7. “You Have a Knocking Sound from the Suspension”

What it sounds like: Someone’s knocking on your car’s door.
What it really means: A part of your suspension system, like a worn-out bush or loose joint, is causing the noise.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Your suspension is what keeps your ride smooth and stable. If it’s knocking, it’s like your car is wearing out its trainers. We’ll find the source of the noise and sort it so your ride feels comfortable again. Suspension can consist of many different parts from springs to shock absorbers (dampers) to anti roll bar drop links and more and each car differs. But we can check it out – let you know what’s up and the cost and get it sorted for you!”

8. “The Water Pump is Seized”

What it sounds like: Your car is holding its water pump hostage.
What it really means: The water pump, which circulates coolant to keep your engine at the right temperature, has stopped working.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Your water pump is like your car’s heart—it pumps coolant around the engine to stop it from overheating. If it’s seized, your engine might overheat, so it’s important to fix it quickly. Don’t worry, we’ll sort it out.”

9. “Your Turbocharger is Whistling”

What it sounds like: Your car is practicing for a musical talent show.
What it really means: The turbocharger, which helps boost your car’s engine power, has a leak or is starting to wear out.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Your turbocharger is like a personal trainer for your engine—it gives it an extra boost. If it’s whistling, it means there’s likely a leak or damage somewhere. We’ll pinpoint the issue and get it running like new.”

10. “Your Heater Matrix is Blocked”

What it sounds like: Your car’s heating system has decided to go on strike.
What it really means: The heater matrix, a small radiator inside your car, is blocked, which stops warm air from circulating into the cabin.

👉 How we explain it at Car Friend:
“Your heater matrix is like a tiny radiator that keeps you warm in the car. If it’s blocked, it’s like having a radiator at home that’s clogged up with sludge—it won’t work properly. We’ll clear the blockage and get the warmth back.”
